1987 World Junior Championships

The 1987 World Junior Championships were won by Cuba. They were the 7th World Junior Championships and were held in Windsor, ON. Cuba went 5-1 in the round-robin while the US was second at 4-2. In the Gold Medal game, the US led 5-3 entering the bottom of the 9th, but Cuba rallied for three runs, with Mariano Gonzalez driving in the winner on a squeeze bunt. The MVP was a US player also named Gonzalez, Paul Gonzalez, who hit .500/~.690/1.000 with 9 runs and 8 RBI in 7 games. Prominent US players in retrospect were Alex Fernandez (0-1, 6.23; .320 batting average) and Royce Clayton (.185, 6 SB) while Canada had Matt Stairs. Host Canada (3-3) beat Taiwan (3-3) 8-4 in the Bronze Medal Game. Australia (3-3), the Dominican Republic (2-4) and Panama (1-5) rounded out the 7-team field.
