History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1965 Pittsburgh Pirates did not score or allow more than 5 runs in any of their first 16 games. They fell one shy of the major league record of 17, held by the 1943 Detroit Tigers but set the National League mark. The 1965 Bucs held the NL record for 47 years before another Pirates club, the 2012 Pirates, broke it.

Bob Bailey hit a home run in the 10th inning of a 1-0 Opening Day win over Juan Marichal and the San Francisco Giants; it would be 49 years until the Pirates had another game-ending homer on Opening Day, that coming in 2014 courtesy of Neil Walker.
