History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1958 Pittsburgh Pirates featured third baseman Frank Thomas with 35 HRs and 109 RBIs. Bob Skinner batted .321 with 13 HRs and 70 RBIs and young Bill Mazeroski had 19 HRs. They had strong outfield defense with Skinner, Bill Virdon and Roberto Clemente. Ted Kluszewski's back problems robbed him of his famous power so rookie Dick Stuart was recalled in July and provided 16 HRs and 48 RBIs at first base. Dick Groat hit .300. Hank Foiles provided good defense but little offense as the catcher. Bob Friend was 22-14, Vern Law went 14-12, rookie Red Witt was 9-2 with a 1.61 ERA and Ron Kline was 13-16. All were right-handed. After having dismal records from 1950 through 1957, the 1958 Bucs were in the pennant race. They finished in second place, 8 games behind the Milwaukee Braves.
