History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1934 Cleveland Red Sox were yet another failed Negro League team in Cleveland, OH, playing only in the 1934 NNL and going just 3-22 there.
One bright spot was their lone All-Star, 2B/3B Andy "Pat" Patterson, who hit .333/.375/.453 (132 OPS+) with 16 RBI in 21 games and fielded .961 (league average of .945). LF LeRoy Taylor batted .342/.377/.438 (129 OPS+). The team OPS+ was 63, though, as the others did not hit nearly as well. RF Wilson Redus hit .265/.368/.286 (85 OPS+), SS Jelly Jackson .286/.318/.333 (83 OPS+), CF Ruben Jones .261/.301/.304 (71 OPS+), C Dennis Gilchrist .205/.247/.260 (43 OPS+) and 1B George McAllister .159/.284/.174 (30 OPS+). The main backups were SS/3B Anthony Cooper (.077/.111/.077, -47 OPS+) and C/3B Ameal Brooks (.189/.231/.351, 62 OPS+).
The team ERA+ was marginally better at 68. The big workhorse was Bill Byrd (2-8, 6.90, 68 ERA+), the league leader in losses. Johnnie Bob Dixon (0-3, 5.17, 90 ERA+) and Roy Roberts (1-2, 6.15, 76 ERA+) were the only other hurlers to pitch more than three games.
