Record: 44-91, Finished 9th in American Association (19th Century) (1891 AA)
Managed by Sam Trott, Pop Snyder, Dan Shannon, and Sandy Griffin
History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1891 Washington Statesmen played in the American Association during its final season. The circuit had been financially shaken by its fight against the Players League in 1890, and while it survived for one more season, the writing was on the wall. The Washington franchise, put together to allow the league to stay alive, was not particularly competitive on the field, finishing 9th with a record well below .500 while cycling through four different managers. However, they were one of the four teams from the American Association to join the National League in 1892 after a peace agreement between the two rival major leagues. After moving to the National League, the team would generally be known as the Washington Senators.
