History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The New Haven Elm Citys or Elm City of New of Haven were Connecticut's third major league team, joining the Middletown Mansfields and contemporary National Association members the Hartford Dark Blues. The team was one of the seven expansion teams that joined the National Association for the 1875 season. Managed by first baseman Charlie Gould, the Elm Citys lost 15 straight games before beating the Washington Nationals 9-2. Gould lasted 23 games, going 2-21, before being replaced by Jumbo Latham, the team's winningest manager (4-14), who in turn was replaced by outfielder Charlie Pabor for the final 6 games. The team finished the season in 8th place with a 7-40 record. However the team only played 10 different opponents, including instate rivals the Dark Blues, posting a 1-8 record. The team’s best months came in July (3-6) and September (2-2). Surprisingly the team was better on the road going 4-16, as opposed to posting a 3-24 record at home. Of the 47 games, the team was 4-20 in blowout games, but 1-8 in close games. After the season, like many of the teams in the National Association, the Elm Citys folded.

Note: the Team name refers to the numerous Elm trees that are found in Connecticut.
