History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The Cincinnati Base Ball Club was first organized on July 23, 1866. Team by-laws were drawn up and club officials were elected. Initially the team was to be called the Resolutes, but J. William Johnson, the man who organized the meeting opposed the name and proposed the team be called the Cincinnati Base Ball Club. Afterwards George Ellard was selected as team manager and team was assembled. The first roster was made up of Bellamy Storer, J. William Johnson, John R. McLean, J. Wayne Neff, Samuel Kemper, John C. How, Charles E. Callahan, Harry Wright, George B. Ellard, Holmes Hoge (Captain) and O. H. Tudor; Drausin Wulsin, Quinton Corwine, Billy Caldwell, J. M. Kennedy, Stanley Matthews, and Andrew Hickenlooper were among those to have participated for the practice games only.

Home games were played at the Live Oaks Base Ball Grounds, located at the foot of Ninth Street in the Millcreek bottoms. Due to the lateness of which the team was assembled, the team managed to schedule only 4 games, against only 2 opponents, all of which were home games. The first game came on September 29th a 20-18 loss to the Buckeye Base Ball Club. Their first win came on October 18th a 53-21 win in a rematch against the Buckeyes. The Cincinnati Club got their second win on October 26th in a 27-21 win over the Copec Club of Covington, Kentucky. The last game of the season took place on October 27th and was a 41-31 loss in a rubber match with the Buckeyes.

During the off-season, Ellard was replaced as manager of the team by Harry Wright, and on December 12th, the team joined the National Association of Base Ball Players.
