Since 1919, there have only been 11 times where a baseball team lost three extra-inning games in a row:

The 2011 Yankees have a shot at joining this group tomorrow.
Interesting note - the '64 Yankees did this to start their season.

Josh Tomlin has made 21 starts this season and while his pitching has had its ups and downs, one thing has remained consistent; nobody has (officially) attempted to run on Tomlin. Nobody, as in literally not a single stolen base has been attempted against the guy. Tomlin did pick a runner off of second on June 28th, but as we head into August, his SB and CS against totals remain the way they were heading into April, 0 and 0. Tomlin's accomplishment is difficult to examine historically because we need play by play data to examine pitcher SB and CS, however we can see where he fits in since 1973. Here are the pitchers since 1973 who started the most games in a season before allowing their first stolen base attempt.

While researching Josh Tomlin for an upcoming post, I came across this tidbit on mlb.com:
"Tomlin has lasted at least five innings in each of his 32 career starts, a modern Major League record."
This is an interesting piece of information that makes for an interesting PI exercise, so lets have at it.
The fact as it is stated, seems to say that Tomlin is the first "modern" pitcher to have pitched at least 5 innings in each of his first 32 major league starts. A quick run of the PI (Pitching streak finder, Pitchers Role:Starter, to start player's career, IP>=5) reveals that this is not true. Read the rest of this entry »

Early in his career, there was concern that the Justin Verlander had ruined his career by overtaxing his young arm. Fortunately, Verlander not only bounced back, but this season he has been as dominant as ever. Yet , Verlander has not let up in his pitching. In fact, he has currently thrown at least 100 pitches in his last 37 starts, dating back to June of last season.
How common is this? The PI currently has complete records of pitch counts since 1999. (There are records for a high percentage of games back to 1988 including all of 1991.) In those 13 years, no pitcher has had more. Here are the longest such streaks (Stats are through June 5th.):

On the heels of yesterday's meltdown by the Yankees in Citi Field, Mike Axisa in his post on the River Avenue Blues blog highlighted the great discrepancy this year by Mariano Rivera at home and on the road. Maybe I haven't been paying enough attention, but thing that surprised me most was that Rivera has yet to allow a run at home. How unusual is this? Here are the most consecutive shutout home appearances by a pitcher to start a season. Read the rest of this entry »

The New York Mets are currently suffering through a power outage like they haven't seen in years. The last Mets homer was by Dan Murphy on May 20th against the Yankees, more than 10 games ago. WFAN in New York mentioned that this was the team's longest homer drought in over 30 years and this is easily verifiable with the PI team batting streak finder. Read the rest of this entry »
