Highest BA In 24+ Game Hitting Streaks Since 1996

Posted by Steve Lombardi on June 2, 2011

Of all the batters to have a hitting streak of 24 games or more since 1996, who had the highest batting average during that streak?

Here's the list:

That's one of the cool things about baseball - that a guy like Joey Cora can hit the ball like he's the greatest hitter who ever lived, albeit just for one month.

  1. Max Says:

I am also fascinated that the lowest is .317, and that Casey Blake got hits in 24 games in a row.

And the only guys on this list multiple times are Ichiro, Nomar, and Vlad, and Nomar has the most. Huh.

  2. Radar Says:

Nomar's making this list three times speaks to how good ,and how consistent a hitter he was. People watching Vlad (two times on the list) hit also forget that this is a guy who has gotten singles off pitches that have bounced in front of the plate.

  3. Raphy Says:

Steve - Out of curiosity, what is the significance of 24 and 1996?

  4. Taylor Says:

  5. Steve Says:

OT but why is the lineup feature removed? All these expanded stats are great but I loved seeing the team lineups.

  6. Bastaducci Says:

to post 1. yeah , those 3 guys all have something in common, they did not walk much.

to post 3. I would guess that it was the 1st year teams played 162 games after the strike in 94 led into 95. just a guess of course.

  7. LeeTro Says:

    @4

The Joe McEwing streak is laughable. His OBP and SLG were basically the MLB average (non-P) for that season. You can't have a more bland streak, knowing an average player was as productive as you.

  8. Thomas Says:

anybody notice Tony Esuebio's streak? it took him 47 team games to get his streak! is it possible to see who had the longest streak in terms of team games? Meaning, backups like Esuebio... guys maybe going on the DL in the middle of a streak... ??

  9. Raphy Says:

About a year and a half-ago, I gathered some similar numbers from a bunch of searches. Cora's batting average was the highest since 1954 (the limit of PI just 1.5 years ago!) among players with 24 game hitting streaks. (Stan Musial had the highest for 20+).

  10. eorns Says:

From May 9-27 during his streak, Cora hit over .500 at 40-for-78. What's the longest stretch this has been done over?

  11. Kingturtle Says:

Ted Williams had a higher BA than Joe DiMaggio over the course of DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak. so, did anyone have a higher BA over 24 games since 1996 than Joey Cora?

  12. Jamie Wilking Says:

I'm shocked Ichiro only has had 2 streaks that long...

  13. Evil Squirrel Says:

I am happy to see Hal Morris' 32 game streak on this list. He often gets swept under the rug when it comes to players with 30+ game streaks, because his spanned two seasons, and he ended the 1996 season at 29 games. Always ticked me off for some reason to see his name omitted on such lists....

As for McEwing.... I believe that streak coincided with the creation of the short-lived "Little Mac Land" at Busch Stadium, which of course was in the lower deck as opposed to the Mark McGwire inspired Big Mac Land in the upper tier. Laugh if you will, but McEwing was a huge fan favorite on an otherwise dreadful 1999 team....

  14. Jon Says:

Cora probably also had the highest ratio of batting average in a hitting streak to listed weight in baseball history, at 3.16 (or .00316).

  15. PhilsPhan Says:

Jimmy Rollins went 38 over two seasons as well - 36 in August/September 2005 and the first two games of 2006 (it might be 35 & 3)

  16. Steve Lombardi Says:

~~Steve - Out of curiosity, what is the significance of 24 and 1996?~~

LOL. Administrative ease. I wanted to do since 1941. But, PI didn't like that. And, I used 24 since I wanted to cut the results and sort by BA. Just picked that line since it was around the top 50 results.

  17. John Autin Says:

Fun facts I just learned about Joey Cora:

    (1) Joey and Alex Cora are brothers. (I may be the only B-R regular who didn't know that, and I feel especially sheepish about it since Alex played with the Mets for a couple of seasons, but there you have it.) Joey, who is 10-1/2 years older than Alex, reached the majors for good in 1989 and played through 1998, while Alex hit the bigs in '98 and is currently with Washington. That's 23 straight years with a Cora brother in the majors.

    (2) Joey Cora scored 111 runs in 1998, mostly in the leadoff role for the Mariners of Junior / A-Rod / Edgar. But when Cora didn't make the Blue Jays' opening-day roster in '99, he decided to retire. I suppose this has been noted here before, but ... Cora's 111 runs are the most ever scored in a player's final MLB season. Only 5 other players scored 100+ in their last year, and 2 of those were Black Sox.

    (3) Joey Cora played almost 1,000 games at 2B, but had consistently poor defensive ratings. His career dWAR was minus-7.3 (!), and he his only year in the black was his rookie campaign. He led AL 2Bs in errors 3 times.

    (4) His most-similar player is Snuffy Stirnweiss. (I find that a Snuffy name-check always brightens up my day.)
