Felix Hernandez wins the AL Cy Young award

18th November 2010

This is a good day for stats geeks like us. Felix Hernandez, despite a 13-12 record, easily won the AL Cy Young award, and deservedly so.

He led AL pitchers in WAR:

Rk Player WAR Age Tm GS CG SHO W L IP SO ERA ERA+
1 Felix Hernandez 6.0 24 SEA 34 6 1 13 12 249.2 232 2.27 174
2 Clay Buchholz 5.4 25 BOS 28 1 1 17 7 173.2 120 2.33 187
3 CC Sabathia 5.4 29 NYY 34 2 0 21 7 237.2 197 3.18 134
4 Jered Weaver 5.4 27 LAA 34 0 0 13 12 224.1 233 3.01 135
5 David Price 5.3 24 TBR 31 2 1 19 6 208.2 188 2.72 145
6 Jon Lester 5.0 26 BOS 32 2 0 19 9 208.0 225 3.25 134
7 John Danks 4.9 25 CHW 32 1 1 15 11 213.0 162 3.72 117
8 C.J. Wilson 4.6 29 TEX 33 3 0 15 8 204.0 170 3.35 129
9 Francisco Liriano 4.6 26 MIN 31 0 0 14 10 191.2 201 3.62 115

Just goes to show you how little Wins and Losses mean, as an individual pitcher stat (despite being, obviously, the most important team stat.)

Jered Weaver had a similar season W-L record and a high WAR.

Amazingly, 50 pitchers have had a WAR of at least 6.0 and a W-L record even worse than Hernandez.

I think Neil is going to follow up with a post on WAR leaders who also won the Cy Young award.

Dan Uggla and good offensive second basemen

17th November 2010

Dan Uggla was traded yesterday from the Marlins to the Braves, after his former team was unable to sign him to a contract extension beyond the 2011 season. This was somewhat surprising given that the Marlins were under some pressure to spend money after reports surfaced that the team had actually been very profitable in 2008 and 2009. Given how good and how recognizable Uggla is, I would have expected the Marlins to find a way to sign him to a longer-term deal.

Anyway, now that Uggla's moving on to the Braves, let's take a look at just how good he is.

Best defensive shortstops in 2010

10th November 2010

Here's an updated list of shortstops from 2010 ranked by best fielding runs (minimum 100 games played, at least half at SS.) Sean fixed a bug that prevented players who appeared with more than 1 team from showing up in the list. I included OPS+ too so we could get a sense of what each player did with his bat.

Tulo comes up as the big winner here, with the best OPS+ and one of the best fielding run totals as well.

There's your AL Gold Glove winner, Derek Jeter, nearly dead last on the list with -10 fielding runs and a 90 OPS+ to boot.
