2010 Productive But Not Full-Time Batters
Posted by Steve Lombardi on November 11, 2010
How many batters last season had between 200 and 350 PA and had more than zero batting wins?
Here's the answer -

Obviously, injuries came into play for some of these guys. In terms of such players per team, here's a somewhat similar breakdown:

What does this all mean? Maybe something, maybe nothing? Maybe it shows us which teams had a lot of good part-time players? Maybe it shows us which teams had a lot of regulars who never missed games and didn't allow their bench players to get a lot of PA? Maybe it shows us which teams had good players not get all the playing time one would expect from a player playing well? Or, maybe it shows us that I was bored today and tried to kill some time with an off-the-wall query?
You tell me - see anything in these stats that catches your eye?

Edmonds and Ramirez had positive batting wins with both of the teams they played for, although they did not have many plate appearances for their other team. Including them on both lists would give the Reds four players and the ChiSox two.

Who invents these silly stastics?
November 11th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
Alicia,
This may not be readily apparent to someone who is new to the site, but this is a baseball blog which is primarily focused on statistics. If you expect to find a different type of content here, then you are going to be disappointed. Fortunately there are at least 3 other sites on the internet devoted to baseball discussion.

Sorry, I thought this was a reference page for current and historical records.
As my p-chem professor once said, you can use statistics to prove any point you want to make.

So what's the fewest PA ever by a league-leader in batting wins?
November 11th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
Kendry Morales ranked 5th in batting wins for the Angels despite having <200 ABs. Tells a story.
November 11th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
I'll tell you what catches my eye - the Phillies had several players who missed time with injuries and had no one on this list! This means that:
1. The injured players didn't do well when they were healthy.
2. The fill-ins weren't that great.
November 11th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Jed Lowrie just missed your cutoff by 3 PA-and had 1.7 offensive wins.
November 11th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
DD @7:
3. The Phillies had 0 players fall within the 200-350 PA range that Steve specified.
They were the only team this season to not have any batters fall within this range.
November 11th, 2010 at 10:37 pm
@2/@4... I'm not sure I get it... I agree that some stats are useless or can be made to show what whatever the poster wants them to... but I don't see anything wrong with this. It's a pretty straightforward and pretty good post...
November 11th, 2010 at 11:24 pm
To answer my own question (@5), and restricting to seasons when teams played 150+ games, it looks like the man I want is Rogers Hornsby. In 1923, he played only 107 games, got only 487 PA, still led the NL in batting wins, with 5.2.

The first table has 32 names, the 2nd 39. Are these all guys like Burrell who qualified with SF but would not with TB or with the 2 combined? (Too many PAs).
November 12th, 2010 at 10:22 pm
This is the "Frank Catalanatto" statistic. You look at a guy's batting average, see that he hit .327 or so, while averaging 3 ABs per game for 125 games, and you think to yourself.... what if I batted this guy 500 times a year? Next thing you know, you're Texas/Toronto, etc. and you've signed him for 4 years, times a ridiculous amount. It's Billy Beane ball, for those who don't know what that means

p.s. Alicia
you're not alone.

Slightly off the topic, but how did Vlad Guerrero win comeback player of the year. He wasn't that bad last year. Only played 100 games, but everything else was on the same pace as this year.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
Thome should've been a full time player the whole year, and I was shocked the White Sox didn't think so either. Sometimes a player hits age 39, misses a few games, and gets written off prematurely.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
Also, it looks like Miguel Cairo has a good season in him about once every 6 years.
