I wouldn't want to hit Big Z with a pitch, would you?
June 28th, 2011 at 11:45 am
It seems oddly appropriate that Armando Galarraga has 28 PA and no hits.
Did you skip most PA w/o a TOBwE because the PI has been a little wonky when searching it?
June 28th, 2011 at 12:07 pm
Ramon Castro and Kelly Shoppach are the list for both no 3Bs and no SBAs. Slow guys?
June 28th, 2011 at 12:12 pm
What about without ever getting on base? I know Verlander's up to 25 PA in that department.
June 28th, 2011 at 1:11 pm
#4: Verlander's 25 leads right now. Blake Hawksworth is second with 18.
June 28th, 2011 at 1:13 pm
I'd just like to note that Ubaldo Jimenez is more than 2/3 of the way to a couple of records:
-- All-time record for most ABs without an extra-base hit (Jim Deshaies, 373); and
-- Modern record for most hits without an extra-base hit (Virgil Barnes, 40).
June 28th, 2011 at 1:15 pm
@3
actually, it appears that Castro has 2 stolen bases.
June 28th, 2011 at 1:27 pm
Thanks Andy and WTG Sean Burnett of my hometown Nats! The only active major leaguer who has had 100% of his hits go for extra bases!
June 28th, 2011 at 1:31 pm
@7 Yes, but the point of that particular list was most plate appearances without having been caught stealing. Castro's a perfect 2 for 2.
June 28th, 2011 at 1:31 pm
The most surprising thing in this entire article is learning that someone out there was given the name "Merkin".
June 28th, 2011 at 2:12 pm
How is a "sacrifice hit" defined? I assumed there were two types of sacrifice hits: sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies. This leaderboard implies otherwise. Can someone clarify?
June 28th, 2011 at 2:15 pm
@10, Mark -- And it seems that Merkin Valdez is the only one with that name who made it to the majors.
And now that you have inspired me to google "merkin" as a word, it makes the name of the U.S. President in Dr. Strangelove... all the more humorous. (That would be Merkin Muffley, of course.)
June 28th, 2011 at 2:18 pm
BSK re: sacrifice hits:
Until 1954, the category "sacrifice hit" covered both sacrifice bunts and (in the years when they were recognized at all) sacrifice flies. Since '54, sacrifice hit, for all practical purposes, means sacrifice bunt.

BSK, yes there are two types. Andy has them in separate lists. Perhaps you scrolled past the sacrifice flies list?
June 28th, 2011 at 2:43 pm

Mark, nice catch. I must have lead a sheltered existence, for I had never heard of a merkin until today.
I received my education today here .......

If JA, with his word power had to google it then I figured it was worth looking up. 🙂
What an odd first name, given its meaning. Could it have a different meaning in Spanish or some other language?
June 28th, 2011 at 3:01 pm
Huff, #3 on the no SH list, DID have an important SH during the NLCS last October. GO GIANTS!! 🙂

June 28th, 2011 at 3:53 pm
JA-
Thanks. Is it possible to get a sac hit without it being a bunt? The ol' hitting-behind-the-runner?
June 28th, 2011 at 4:35 pm
how has Zambrano NOT been hit by a pitch?
I'd throw at him every time he was winning and my pitcher was tiring. He's so easy to knock off his game that you'd be a fool to just let him get comfortable. Mess with his game and he'll fall to pieces and pitch like crap.
June 28th, 2011 at 5:56 pm
Were it not for the generosity of Jake Westbrook, Jason Tyner would be atop the homerless leader board, by over 450 PA's:)
I'd hope, that my team would have my back, if I were the guy, leading off the next half-inning, after Zambrano got hit by a pitch. (Or, I'd at least swap out the corked bat, for a much weightier model.)
June 28th, 2011 at 6:12 pm
Zambrano is the same guy who has hit 20 batters in a season.
June 28th, 2011 at 8:24 pm
@3.
Interesting also that Shoppach is on the no triple list, because .... he is the last guy to record 5 XBHs in a game.

Shoppach is also 3rd all-time in PAs among players with neither an SB or a CS in their careers. Here are those to do this in careers of over 1000 PAs.

Javier Valentin 1663 1997-2008
Kelly Shoppach 1356 2005-2011

BSK/19, no, only bunts are credited as sacrifices. Hitting behind the runner gets you nothing but your teammates' handshakes.

Merkin is of course a crotch wig
