Retired Players With 200 Career HR Or Less And 15+ Games With 2+ HR

Posted by Steve Lombardi on June 28, 2011

How many retired players have 200 career HR or less, but, have 15+ games in their career where they hit more than one HR?

If I did this correctly, here is the list -

That's not a very large group, is it? Any names on it, or missing, that jump out at you?

  1. Brendan Says:

Henry Rodriguez was using steroids, I think. Maybe Wilson and Higginson as well.

  2. Blurr Says:

    Preston Wilson
Relatives: Stepson & Nephew of Mookie Wilson

    Is he his own grandpaw?

  3. John Autin Says:

I remember Nokes as a Tiger, of course. But I'm surprised to find that 10 of his 15 multi-HR games came with the Yankees, and 9 of those in the Bronx.

Nokes was a big fan of the ol' short porch, it seems. He hit 44 HRs in 681 career ABs in Yankee Stadium.

  4. Rick Agran Says:

I know Jim Gentile and will share this with him.

  5. Larry R. Says:

    @4

Tell him how awesome he was in '61 while you're at it.

    @2

Does that mean Mookie married his ex-sister-in-law? I hope it wasn't his sister (or brother or ex-brother-in-law).

  6. Neil L. Says:

Steve, Ron Kittle with less than 200 HR? I never would have guessed.

After his monster ROY season in 1983 I would have pegged him for more than 200!

  7. Chuck Says:

"Does that mean Mookie married his ex-sister-in-law?"

    Technically, no.

Mookie's brother is Preston's biological father but he and his mother were not married and he had the last name of his mother.

When Mookie married her, he adopted Preston and gave him the name Wilson.

  8. Chuck Says:

    Steve..question.

The chart doesn't show the total multi-homer games each had.

    Can you run that, please?

  9. Hartvig Says:

Gentile lost a couple of what may have been his best seasons in the minors behind Gil Hodges. And I saw Matt Nokes a few times in his years with the Tigers and then again years later at a St. Paul Saints game.

  10. Steve Lombardi Says:

"The chart doesn't show the total multi-homer games each had"

Chuck, you can find them in here:

    http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/share.cgi?id=TNi9J

It's the group that I ran and then compared against the <200 career guys.

  11. John Autin Says:

Just to mix it up a little, here are the players with multiple 3-HR games and the lowest career HR total:

    2 games of 3+ HRs:
    -- 54 HRs, Dusty Rhodes
    -- 75 HRs, Darnell Coles
    -- 86 HRs, Pat Seerey
    -- 94 HRs, Erubiel Durazo
    -- 101 HRs, Geronimo Berroa

    3 games of 3+ HRs:
    -- 235 HRs, Ben Oglivie
    -- 248 HRs, Goose Goslin
    -- 298 HRs, Mark Teixeira

    4 games of 3+ HRs:
    -- 256 HRs, Larry Parrish
    -- 297 HRs, Aramis Ramirez

BTW, both Aaron Boone (126 HRs) and Bret Boone (252 HRs) had a pair of 3-HR games. Neither their father nor their grandfather ever did it.

Gus Bell had a pair of 3-HR games, but neither his son nor his grandsons ever did it.

And finally ... Ken Griffey, Jr. (630 HRs) had two 3-HR games; his dad (152 HRs) had one. And Henry Aaron (755) had just one.

  12. Chuck Says:

    Thanks, Steve.

  13. Sam G Says:

@ 4: it would be interesting if he remembers the circumstances of his 3 stolen bases in the nine seasons he played!

  14. Rick Agran Says:

    @Larry R. (#5)
-- Absolutely ! As SABR member, with help from Baseball-Reference.com,Elias Sports Bureau,MLB,O's helped changed 1961 A.L. RBI title to reflect tie with Roger Maris based on long ago error found by another but not reflected accurately in the record books. For the record,Gentile's 1961 RBI/AB ratio is 16th all-time in A.L.having slighty over 100 less at bats than Maris.Gentile's 1960 RBI/AB total also ranks #61 all-time(AL),as well.Way to go,"Diamond Jim".

  15. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

I was sort of surprised not to see Art Shamsky making any of these lists.

  16. Clint W Says:

As a White Sox fan, I was also surprised that Kittle had less than 200 homers--would've guessed 250.

  17. Andy Patton Says:

Shocked Bo Jackson wasn't on this list, looked it up he hit 141 career HR but only had 7 multi HR games.

  18. Steve Says:

OT No pinch hitting leaders or am I missing it?

  19. Doug Says:

Don Mincher and Don Money surprise me. In my memory, I never thought of them (especially Money) as power guys.

But, Mincher definitely had some pop - five 20+ HR seasons in 7 years.

Money is more what I remember - basically around 15 HR every year, except one season that sticks out at 25 HR. Stars must have been aligned that year. Evidently, he got his knocks in bunches.

  20. Timmy p Says:

    Jose Reyes is on fire!

  21. Erik Smith Says:

Statistically, 15 triples in 79th game puts him on pace to obliterate any modern day accumulation of 3-baggers in one season.

  22. Timmy p Says:

He just got a double also!

  23. mccombe35 Says:

    Kittle! Woohoo!

  24. Timmy p Says:

Charlie Furbush is pitching for Detroit!

  25. mccombe35 Says:

    For the other Kittle comments.

He did hit 67 HRs in his 1st 2 seasons but injuries kept him to just 2,708 ABs

It probably seems like he hit more HRs because he's 23rd all time in HR / AB ratio.

Ahead of numerous HOFers including guys like Aaron, Gehrig, & Mays

  26. Dukeofflatbush Says:

    Chuck,

was the Mookie marriage to his bro's babies momma inside-ned-to-know 1978 clubhouse stuff?

Preston Wilson had six 2 HR games in under 2 seasons for the Rockies (284 games)

  27. Neil L. Says:

    @20-@22
Timmy Patrick and Erik Smith, I am drinking the Jose Reyes Kool-Aid. I am now a true believer.

I hope John Autin posts about Jose Reyes later tonight.

Chant it with me ..... Jose Reyes for MVP, Jose Reyes for MVP! 🙂

  28. Timmy p Says:

@27 They pulled Jose in the 7th which is too bad, he had a chance to hit for the cycle with a HR.

  29. Steve Says:

28 When I saw they put in Tejada as a pinch runner I almost had a heart attack thinking Jose got hurt.

  30. Neil L. Says:

    @29
Steve, no worries. Managers don't care about statistics for individuals.

  31. Dukeofflatbush Says:

    @ neil,
they coulda at least let him steal second and third. that's how they did it in '78

  32. Chuck Says:

    Duke @ #26,

    Nope, public knowledge.

  33. drew weaver Says:

Money jumps out -- All those other guys had pretty good HR per at bat totals -- I know this from playing Cadaco's All-Star Baseball. Money had a small homer zone 2-3% as I recall.

  34. George Says:

Mincher - Currently reading Ball Four for my first time. His name is sprinkled throughout.

  35. Voomo Zanzibar Says:

Wish they would make a movie of Ball Four.
    And without Brad Pitt.

  36. Frank Clingenpeel Says:

    Voomo:

They tried to make a television series out of Ball Four. It died a quick, ignominious -- and, I thought, deserved -- death.
