Biographical Information[edit]
Zip Collins played five seasons in the majors. He and his contemporary, Zip Zabel, are the only two major leaguers remembered as "Zip". An outfielder by trade, his best season was 1915, a season split between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Braves. Zip hit .294/.340/.353 in 101 games for the Pirates, then moved to Boston in September for the stretch run while hitting .286/.375/.500 in 5 games (14 at bats). In an odd statistical feat, Zip hit only one double in 268 at bats in 1916 while legging out six triples. Thus, he holds the "record" for most triples in a season by a player with one double.
He worked as an inspector at a defense plant in New Jersey during World War I.
