Biographical Information

Zachary Taylor played 13 games for the Baltimore Canaries in 1874. He was brought on board September 10th when the team's regular first baseman, Charlie Gould took a leave of absence because his wife was hospitalized with complications after giving birth. He played the remainder of the season hit .250 for a team which overall hit .245.

He was a well-known amateur player with the local Peabody club, and drew praise for his defensive work. He was originally listed simply as "Taylor", although researchers soon found he was named after the 12th President. He was the mainstay of the Peabody club for a full decade, first surfacing in a newspaper story in 1867. In the 1870s almost all boxscores published about the team's games included his name at first base. He was mentioned by name as the team's captain. Another player who was around at approximately the same time was Live Oak Taylor, who was born in 1851.

He was born in Baltimore, MD in 1850, during the administration of his namesake President. His father was a butter manufacturer. The headquarters of the Peabody club were located at his residence on Camden Street.
