Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Zach Brzykcy's unusual last name is pronounced "BRICK-see". He was signed by the Washington Nationals on July 1, 2020 after failing to be taken in the truncated 2020 amateur draft, which was reduced to five rounds by the COVID-19 pandemic. He could have stayed one more year at Virginia Tech but decided to accept the minimal signing bonus that the Nats were offering in order to get his professional career under way. After making his first professional appearances with the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the High-A East in 2021, he reached AAA by the end of the 2022 season but then had to miss all of 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

He returned to action in 2024, making appearances at four different levels from the rookie-class FCL Nationals to the AAA Rochester Red Wings and going a combined 2-0, 2.04 in 30 games. He struck out 43 batters in 30 1/3 innings. On September 1st, he was one of two players added to Washington's roster when rosters expanded, alongside infielder Darren Baker, and both made their major league debuts in the 9th inning of that day's game against the Chicago Cubs. While things went well for Baker, who hit a single as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the frame, it had been a nightmare for Zach a few minutes earlier, as asked to pitch the final inning of a game in which the Nats were trailing, 7-1, he only managed to record two outs while surrendering 5 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks; Orlando Ribalta had to bail him out, but only did so after allowing another four hits as the Cubs scored seven times in all. Zach's ERA at the end of the day was an ungodly 67.50.
