Biographical Information

Young-shin Kim was the first player to have his number retired in Korea Baseball Organization history.

Kim caught for the South Korean national team in the 1983 Intercontinental Cup, 1984 Amateur World Series (hitting .297/.422/.351 with 8 walks in 11 games and throwing out 8 of 12 attempted base-stealers; he tied for third in the event in walks) and 1984 Olympics. The OB Bears drafted him second overall in the 1985 KBO draft, after Un-Hak Ahn. Young-shin went 4 for 21 with a walk, run and two RBI in 1985 and 1 for 11 in 1986. In August of 1986, he drowned himself in the Han River. The Bears retired his number 54, the first number retired by a KBO team.
