Biographical Information[edit]
Yoshinori Sumiyoshi has played in Nippon Pro Baseball and for the Japanese national team.
Sumiyoshi represented Japan in 1990 Asian Games and 1990 Baseball World Cup. In the latter event, he hit .281/.410/.375 with 7 walks and 9 runs in 9 games, handling 81 chances error-free at first base. He tied for the event lead in walks and tied for second on Japan in runs.
The Nippon Ham Fighters drafted him in the first round of the 1990 NPB draft. Sumiyoshi hit .175/.195/.200 in 27 games in his rookie year, but he only had 4 more at-bats with the big club, and spent the next four years in the NPB Farm Leagues. He transferred to the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1996, but he was unable to return to the major league. He announced his retirement after the 1996 season.
Overall, Sumiyoshi had hit .159/.178/.182 in 6 seasons in NPB.
