York, ON

From BR Bullpen

York is a regional municipality in southern Ontario, located north of the Toronto, ON metropolitan area and extending all the way to Lake Simcoe, a good 30 miles to the north of Toronto city limits. It was formed in 1971 by grouping a number of existing cities such as Newmarket, ON, Markham, ON and Richmond Hill, ON, as well as villages with their own identity such as Thornhill, ON. It is largely an administrative unit, and most persons will tend to refer to the component part of the municipality as their home town, and not to the larger entity.

For added confusion, there is also a neighborhood within Toronto called York, which was a self-standing city until its amalgamation in 1997. Toronto itself was known as the "Town of York" until being renamed in 1834.
