Yariel Duque was an unimpressive player in his first three seasons for Matanzas, hitting .243 and slugging .327 through 2007-2008. In 2008-2009, he broke through, hitting .365/.433/.560 with 81 RBI in 88 games; his defense was the biggest problem, as he fielded .937 at 2B and 3B. He tied Lerys Aguilera for 4th in the Serie Nacional in RBI, trailing only Alfredo Despaigne, Yulieski Gourriel and Rolando Meriño. He tied Henry Urrutia for 8th in the circuit in average. Duque made Cuba's preliminary 58-man roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup but did not make the final cut.

2008-2009 looked like an anomaly when he fell to .264/.325/.372 in 2009-2010 with a .928 fielding percentage as a 3B-1B. His 18 errors tied for 5th in the league.
