Biographical Information[edit]

Yamel Guevara pitched for Industriales of the Cuban National Series before defecting to the United States in October 2004 with his half-brother, Yunel Escobar, and four other players. In Cuba, he had gone 18-7 with a 2.99 ERA and .220 opponent average in three seasons. In 242 2/3 innings, he had 223 strikeouts but 129 walks.

He played one season (2008) with the independent Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League, going 1-2 with an ERA of 5.81 in 23 games, four of them starts. In 48 innings, he struck out 55 men, but walked 40 and hit two. He also uncorked five wild pitches and balked twice.
