Biographical Information[edit]
William Vail was a first baseman who played for the New York Gothams, beginning in 1852, which was the club's first season ever. Vail was mentioned in "The Man Who Invented Baseball" by Harlod Peterson (a book about the life of Alexander Cartwright), which said that Vail's father was a sea captain and was apparently one of the people who helped transport all the gold from California to Washington DC during the Gold Rush.
