Biographical Information[edit]
William Gallagher played 14 games at shortstop for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1896, a team which had some big names on it - the 38-year-old Dan Brouthers, the 36-year-old Sam Thompson, the 28-year-old Ed Delahanty and rookie Nap Lajoie. Gallagher himself was 22 years old, and hit reasonably well, putting up a batting line of .306/.433/.347.
He is not to be confused with an earlier pitcher named also named William Gallagher and remembered as Bill Gallagher.
The shortstop Gallagher played at least six years in the minors, moving around a lot.
