William Edward Close, Sr.
Biographical information[edit]
William Close was a minor league infielder from 1948 to 1956 and a minor league manager in 1954 and 1955.
Close played in 862 games over the course of his eight-year career, hitting around .296. He hit as high as .368 in a season (1950).
In 1954, he managed the Madisonville Miners (KITTY Lg) after replacing Bob Latshaw. The following year, he managed the Miners until they disbanded on July 7. At that time, they had a 23-37 record.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
