Biographical Information[edit]
Will Bednar is the brother of major league pitcher David Bednar. As a sophomore pitcher for Mississippi State University in 2021, he had an outstanding season, not only leading the team to the 2021 College World Series as he went 9-1, 3.12, but then being named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player as Mississippi State won its first-ever national title. He and reliever Landon Sims were nearly perfect during the tournament, combining on a record 21 strikeouts - 15 by Bednar - in a 2-1 win over the University of Texas on June 20th, and then on a one-hitter in the finale against Vanderbilt University on June 30th, a 9-0 win. A few weeks later, on July 11th, he was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the #14 pick of the 2021 amateur draft. Observers quickly pointed out that the Giants had previously used a first-round pick on another player named Will from Mississippi State - 1B Will Clark in the 1985 Amateur Draft - and that it hadn't turned out badly given that Clark had developed quickly into a perennial All-Star.
