Team History[edit]

Folding after just two weeks of play in 1993, the West Virginia Coal Sox are the shortest-lived team ever to play in the Independent Frontier League. The Coal Sox were unique in that they were not independently owned by local fans and business people. Instead, the Coal Sox were owned by the Frontier League. The league was unable to find local buyers in the small town of Wayne, WV, a town of only 1,100 year-round residents. The Coal Sox played their home games at Pioneer Field at Wayne County High School and were managed by George Brumfield, head coach of the high school baseball team. The team averaged only 117 fans per game, and the league made the decision not to support the team on July 15, 1993. Players and coaches never received paychecks from the Coal Sox.

The Team ended with an overall record of 3 Wins and 7 Losses, and drew a total of less than 700 fans in its existence.
