Biographical Information

Wataru Adachi pitched 38 games in Nippon Pro Baseball and spent one year in the US minor leagues.

Adachi was picked by the Hiroshima Carp in the 5th round in 1985 NPB draft, straight out of high school. He once fanned Bo Jackson three times in an Arizona Fall Instructional League contest. Adachi was farmed out to the Peninsula Pilots in the USA in 1989 and went 7-8 with a 3.85 ERA; he led the team in wins (tied) and strikeotus (119) on a club that was just 37-81 when other hurlers got the decision.

Returning to Japan late in the year, he made his Central League debut with the Carp on October 8. He was 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two games for Hiroshima in 1989 then tossed three shutout innings in 1990.

Adachi saw his only regular action in NPB in 1991, going 3-7 with a save and a 3.79 ERA as a swingman for the Carp. He struck out 82 in 90 1/3 innings and held opponents to a .229 average but walked 52. In the 1991 Japan Series, he retired all three batters he faced, striking out two, but Hiroshima fell in 7 games to the Seibu Lions.

Adachi's role declined in 1992 (1-2, 5.51 in 4 starts, 12 BB in 16 1/3 IP). After not appearing for the Carp in 1993, he was sold to the Nippon Ham Fighters. Adachi was 0-1 with a 8.10 ERA in four games for the Fighters in 1994 to end his career.

In 2000, Adachi was arrested for possession of speed.
