Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Walter Ward spent five years in the minor leagues, playing from 1937 to 1939, in 1941 and in 1946.
The hurler began his career as a 17-year-old with the Monett Red Birds, going 2-3 in six appearances. In 1938, he went 6-14 with a 3.33 ERA in 34 games for the Union City Greyhounds and in 1939, he went 6-8 with a 7.27 ERA in 22 games for the Bassett Furnituremakers. After not playing in 1940, he returned to pitch for the Kinston Eagles, Lynchburg Senators and Petersburg Rebels in 1941, going 4-10 in 21 games. He missed 1942 to 1945 while serving with the United States Army during World War II. He returned briefly with Union City in 1946, going 2-3 with a 4.77 ERA in 11 games.
Overall, he was 20-38 in 94 games.
