Biographical Information[edit]
Walter Ockey was signed by the New York Giants and pitched for the Milford Giants in the Eastern Shore League in 1939 and 1941. He was 13-7 with a 2.85 ERA for the team in the latter year, tying for fourth in the league in wins.
He then served in the Army during World War II. He was discharged in 1944 and pitched in 2 games for the 1944 Giants, allowing one run in 2 2/3 IP. He also briefly pitched for the Jersey City Giants that year, going 0-1 with a 10.00 ERA in 11 games. He walked 39 while striking out just eight in 27 innings.
Although Ockey's two games were in May 1944, he was not released by New York until March 1945. Walter split the 1945 season between the Newark Bears (0-2, 14 BB in 13 IP while fanning two), the Norfolk Tars (3-1) and the Binghamton Triplets (2-4, 4.26) to post a career record of 18-15.
