Walter M. Langford

Former Chairman of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Notre Dame and author of a classic study of Mexican literature, Walter Langford also had great success coaching first the fencing, then the tennis squad while at Notre Dame. After his retirement, however, Professor Langford focused on the sport closest to his heart, authoring in 1987 the much-cited resource, Legends of Baseball: An Oral History of the Game's Golden Age[1], a few chapters of which had already appeared, in slightly different form, in the pages of Baseball Digest.
