Biographical Information[edit]
Vicente Scarpatte was a star C/1B in the Dominican Republic in the mid-1940s.
He played for the Dominican national team in the 1944 Amateur World Series and 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games, winning Silver the latter time. [1] He turned pro in Colombia in 1947 and led the league with five homers. [2] He next was with the Puerto Rican League's San Juan Senators in 1949-1950 and 1950-1951, hitting .278. [3]
When the Dominican League formed in 1951, he was a member of the Leones del Escogido. He hit .305/.374/.415 to finish second on the club in average. In the finals, he was 4 for 19 with 4 runs and 2 RBI in five games. [4] Like many players, he begun to decline after age 27. He fell to .253/.262/.301 and .186/.273/.203 in 1953, when he joined the Águilas Cibaeñas. In 1954, he was 7 for 42 with a double and a homer, then was 7 for 47 (all singles) in 1955 and 2 for 11 in 1956.
In 1957, he hit .176/.312/.220 for the Águilas, then .134/.181/.164 in 1958. He was 2 for 22 in 1959 and 1 for 2 in 1960. He retired with a .214/.276/.270 batting line in 213 regular-season games in the Dominican League, with 40 runs and 59 RBI. He became the Águilas' manager in 1960-1961, going 23-24.
Scarpatte moved to the US in the early 1980s and spent the rest of his life in Massachusetts. [5]
