Rodriguez, born in New York, NY, grew up in Puerto Rico and signed as a free agent in 1977 with the Baltimore Orioles organization when he was 15 1/2 years old. As a minor younger than 18, he had to be removed from games at 9 p.m. in compliance with child labor laws when he played with his first minor league team in Bluefield, WV. He played in the minors from 1978 to 1984 before getting his first major league chance at age 23 in 1984. During those early years, he made nine stops in the minors, hitting at least .290 at six of them.
After his cup of coffee in 1984, he moved to the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals organizations before coming to the Minnesota Twins organization in 1988. In the minors from 1985 to 1989, he made five stops, hitting at least .290 three times.
He came up for another cup of coffee with the Twins in 1989, and continued in their minor league organization through 1991. He played in the minors through 1995, hitting over .290 in 1991 and 1993.
Altogether, Vic had 18 minor league seasons to go along with his .429 major league average. He hit over .290 lifetime in the minors.
Rodriguez was a coach with the Sarasota Red Sox in 1996-1997 and Augusta GreenJackets in 2000. He was the Boston Red Sox Latin American field coordinator from 2004-2006, then became the Red Sox' Minor League hitting coordinator in 2007 [1].
