User talk:Jj137/Archive 1
Hi there JJ. Nice to see some of you are following my lead and contributing over here. I've been here a week and already have 1884 contributions, heh, typical me. Anyway, I'm trying to build pages here. Feel free to help out, I'm be working very hard tomorrow building pages. Perhaps, as Ksy92003 suggested to me, maybe we could use this place to build articles for all teams than copy them to Wikipedia. There being no redirect/deletion problems, we won't have a limited amount of time to do it. Happy editing! Soxrock 19:52, 12 August 2007 (EDT)
JJ, please vote at season articles. I need consensus with this. Thanks Soxrock 21:18, 12 August 2007 (EDT)
Wikipedia[edit]
Hi there. If you can, please vote at this page regarding Wikipedia and should we take content or not. Thanks Soxrock 17:23, 17 August 2007 (EDT)
Template[edit]
Did you get this straight from Wikipedia? Just wondering. Jj137 17:36, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- Yeah, but I modified it to be suitable for the Pen. This is purely for navigation. I don't think it violates the agreement I made on the Main Page talk page. That's for content SoxrockTalk/Edits 17:38, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- OK, I see the changes now. Thanks Jj137 17:40, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- FYI, I did apply for AWB at Wikipedia. It's a good software to have "just in case" I assume. SoxrockTalk/Edits 17:41, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- Best of luck with it. Jj137 17:43, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
Recent changes[edit]
I must tell you JJ: Bad timing. But since the Yanks were not in your question, I'll answer more properly
I don't know. I generally just do it manually, i.e., I look at an editor and see their every 500 edits, and just count back as far as I can. It's tedious, but there is no AWB for that (ok, bad joke, sorry). But who knows? Even though I have close to 8500 edits, I've been here only about two months. SoxrockTalk/Edits 21:41, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- Ha ha, I liked that joke! Well, I see what you mean, it is very tedious, but it works. Thanks for all the help- I'll try not to bug you any more. jj137 (Talk) 21:44, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
Well, keep in mind JJ, I'm not mad at you. Your not really bugging me. There's no problem with the new guy asking me what it's like around these parts. I just said that "bad timing" thing because my beloved Yanks are losing 11-3 at last check. That's what I'm mad about. Sorry if I mad a wrong impression on you by saying that. SoxrockTalk/Edits 21:51, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- Oh no don't worry! I just thought I might be bugging you from asking you a bunch of stuff lately. And very sorry about your Yanks- I know how it feels- my Reds are pathetic year in and year out. jj137 (Talk) 22:14, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
Eh, I should've thought about the Reds. But, and no offense to you or the Reds, in 2007, we Yankee fans expect victories, but I can only assume Reds fans hope for wins. That's how bad the Reds are SoxrockTalk/Edits 22:45, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- Ha ha yeah, we'd be glad with a record above .500 and second place. Well, at least I would. jj137 (Talk) 22:49, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
Yeah, sorry about that myself. However, rather the Reds go 100-62 or 62-100, when you lose 12-3, you're not gonna be content, right? SoxrockTalk/Edits 23:02, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
- Perfectly right there. It's so annoying to see them lose not only a lot but badly. jj137 (Talk) 23:04, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
Vandalism[edit]
(No longer existant page) is vandalism/nonsense and should be deleted; 71.243.163.252 has been removing a lot of content but I was able to revert it all. Thanks jj137 (Talk) 15:34, 5 October 2007 (EDT)
71.243.163.252 sounds like the guy who was claiming a guy named Joe Chiasson accomplished lots of stuff he never did. When we removed it, I guess he got upset. Thanks for fixing it! - --Mischa 11:21, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
No problem jj137 (Talk) 13:57, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
Blank lines[edit]
Many pages have blank lines following an image (usually a baseball card) so that the text is distinct from the image.
Thanks for the minor edits here and there! - --Mischa 11:41, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
- OK, should I continue to rm the white space or should I just leave it? Thanks jj137 (Talk) 13:57, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
I don't think it needs to be removed. There are more important things to work on, I think. - --Mischa 14:22, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
- I guess I have been getting a little too sidetracked with white space; there's nothing there (in the white space, that is) so I have no reason to worry about it. Thanks plenty for the help. jj137 (Talk) 16:57, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
Vandals[edit]
Wow, what is with all of the vandalism lately? Good job reverting it, I think we got it all. jj137 (Talk) 23:07, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
Maybe they're Rockies fans taking out their frustrations. Kinston eagle 23:09, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
Ha ha, possibly, that would make sense. We've seen this random vandalism countless times before, but not so much. I think it may just be one or two people changing their IP address over and over. jj137 (Talk) 23:11, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
Just a quick little update here, in case you haven't read the previous message yet. I just did a quick IP lookup, as I was getting suspicious, and this person was traced to...Mexico City. I guess that's why the words don't make any sense. jj137 (Talk) 23:18, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
One last update, I promise :) I left the person a message, and they didn't stop. I then translated a message into Spanish...and they stopped, amazingly. I really didn't think that would work. jj137 (Talk) 23:31, 24 October 2007 (EDT)
Bots[edit]
Hi, since you are an administrator I would like to ask you this. I have installed the bot program(s) on my computer and would like to see if it is OK to create a bot account on here. Right now, the only thing I would have it do is finish the tedious task I have been working on, which is to change the "Click edit above to add more biographical information" to simply "Biographical Information" on all biographical articles. I just wanted to know if this was OK. Thanks. jj137 (Talk) 15:38, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
It would be fine to make a bot to change the headers as you suggest. - --Mischa 15:46, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
Great, thanks! I'm almost done with the configuring; I probably will name it "JJBot". jj137 (Talk) 16:03, 1 November 2007 (EDT)
Places[edit]
Adding "Town name" is a city in "state" really doesn't flesh out the information on a place at all. Additionally, it is often incorrect in that many of the places you're adding it to are not cities, but towns or villages. - --Mischa 11:57, 4 November 2007 (EST)
- OK... good point. When doing those in the future I will modify the sentence around to say whether they are a city, town, village etc. and what their significance is to get its own article (generally just who was born or died there). Thanks jj137 (Talk) 16:48, 4 November 2007 (EST)
Bots login[edit]
Just type in the password and hit enter, when it asks; even if it doesn't show that you have typed the password in, it will still register. After the initial login you should not have to login any more. Some quick caveats regarding bot usage:
- the site will automatically block your IP address if you edit to many pages in a short period of time (~500 to 1000 per few hours), so when making mass edits of thousands or more pages you will have to divide up the edits somehow (you want to replace "==Click edit above...==" with "==Biography==", correct?)
- start small and test before making any large scale edits
- finally, try to make run the bot when an administrator is around (at least to begin with) so that if something does go wrong, the bot can quickly be blocked and stopped.
Hope this helps. --MichaelEng (talk) 22:18, 9 November 2007 (EST)
Changing links[edit]
What's the purpose of changing [[1903 WS|1903]] to [[1903 World Series|1903]] and like changes? Either way the link works the same way and there's plenty of more useful work that could be done around here. - --Mischa 19:49, 19 November 2007 (EST)
- Too true; I always seem to get caught up in the most trivial things. I was just trying to fix the link from heading to a redirect, but it wasn't very necessary. jj137 (Talk) 19:52, 19 November 2007 (EST)
Thanks... much easier than how I had been doing rosters. Templates always confuse me. :) -Chisoxfan 22:20, 30 November 2007 (EST)
Rosters[edit]
I'm not sure. I mean, I only want those templates up there so that I do not have to do this work (tagging all the articles that is) when I actually create the templates. So I don't quite agree. Sorry SoxrockTalk/Edits 21:24, 19 December 2007 (EST)
- Same opinion. In my mind, why bother creating them before they are beign worked on. This is different than Wikipedia, because this would involve creating boilerplate templates, not simply on the actual page. I like the thought, but it wouldn't work for me on this project. Feel free to do this if you work on the rosters, though. SoxrockTalk/Edits 21:29, 19 December 2007 (EST)
- I don't care much about it either, its just I've been waiting for Sports Unfiltered tonight, it was an good matchup, so I watched it. Even being a Lakers fan, I didn't hate the Celtics until this year, when they were suddenly this juggernaut. It makes sense when you also consider me, Yankees, Celtics, Boston, etc. SoxrockTalk/Edits 21:52, 19 December 2007 (EST)
I changed the 1999 Rockies page back so it has the lineup listed under the starting lineup. - --Mischa 09:07, 27 December 2007 (EST)
It used to list the lineup. Now it just lists the positions played by the opening day starters, taking away the important detail of who hit where in the order. - --Mischa 12:29, 30 December 2007 (EST)
That looks fine to me. - --Mischa 12:31, 30 December 2007 (EST)
Pages deleted as requested. - --Mischa 19:36, 19 January 2008 (EST)
Fantasy League[edit]
I'm wondering if there is any interest in a Bullpen Fantasy League for the regulars here. Let me know if you have any thoughts on this. I would think we would need at least six participants, and we would have to decide if it would exist here, on one of our private websites or if we would start a private league in an existing system such as Yahoo's fantasy league. Drop me a line on my talk page and spread the word if interested. Kinston eagle 16:35, 7 February 2008 (EST)
- If you have room for me and nobody else objects. Let me know the details or send me link to where you're discussing this at Wikipedia. Thanks. Kinston eagle 07:59, 8 February 2008 (EST)
- That's alright. Have fun and good luck with the upcoming season. Kinston eagle 22:01, 8 February 2008 (EST)
