Tyler Smarslok was a four-year starter for Kean University. He helped lead Kean to two conference tournament championships and three Division III Mid-Atlantic regional titles. During his junior season Smarslok committed only 3 errors in 249 chances and won the Rawlings National Gold Glove. Smarslok graduated in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in exercise science and later worked on a master's degree in educational leadership at Heidelberg University.

After graduation Smarslok coached baseball at a number of colleges and universities. In 2020, the Minnesota Twins hired Smarslok to coach the GCL Twins before the minor league season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

In his first season as a professional coach, Smarslok helped lead one of the better defenses at the Triple-A level. He once again shined as defensive coach in 2023 as the Saints were tied for the fifth fewest errors (98), tied for sixth in fielding percentage (.981), and seventh in double plays (137). Under Smarslok’s guidance, the Saints set a franchise record with 11 consecutive games without an error in 2023 and tied their best fielding percentage.
