Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Ty Madden was the 32nd overall pick of the 2021 amateur draft, taken in Competitive Balance Round A by the Detroit Tigers. He had just gone 7-5, 2.45 in 18 starts for the University of Texas, as a redshirt sophomore, since his abbreviate 2020 season, in which he went 3-0 when the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly stopped play, did not count towards his future eligibility. It didn't matter since he signed quickly with Detroit, the scout being George Schaefer. Before that, he had been a 34th round choice by the Kansas City Royals in the 2018 amateur draft coming out of high school.
He began his pro career in 2022 with the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League, where he made 19 starts, then he was promoted to the AA Erie SeaWolves of the Eastern League, where he made 7 more starts. Overall, he was 8-6, 3.01, pitched 122 2/3 innings, struck out 133 batters and walked 38. In 2023, he spent a full season with Erie, making 25 starts in 26 appearances, logging 118 innings, and finishing at 3-4, 3.43. He recorded 146 strikeouts and was named a Tigers organizational All-Star.
In 2024, he started the year by making 4 starts with Erie, with no decisions and an ERA of 2.55, then was promoted to the AAA Toledo Mud Hens. There, he went3-5, 7.97 in 18 starts, but still got the opportunity to make his major league debut with the Tigers, doing so as the starting pitcher against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on August 26th. He pitched 5 innings, givcing up 2 runs (one earned) on 4 hits and eneded with a no-decision as Detroit won the game, 6-3, thanks to a five-run 7th inning.
