Trey McCall was a first-round draft pick who stalled in A ball then became a college coach.

The Philadelphia Phillies took McCall with the 16th pick of the 1985 amateur draft out of high school. He was the fourth selection from the draft who would not make the majors - one of the others was the only high school catcher picked higher that year, Kurt Brown (B.J. Surhoff was the only college catcher chosen in the first 15 picks).

Trey hit only .224/.338/.343 with 53 strikeouts in 134 AB for the 1985 Bend Phillies. Baseball America still listed him as the #9 prospect in the Northwest League. In 1986, he put up similar stats - .222/~.324/.379 with a career-high six home runs for the Spartanburg Phillies. He split 1987 between Spartanburg (.232/.298/.357 in 33 G) and the Clearwater Phillies (.197/.283/.279 in 66 G). Returning to Clearwater, he hit .176/.256/.198 in 1988 and .173/.256/.198 in 1989. Overall, he hit only .202 with a .291 slugging percentage in 309 minor league games.

Going to college, McCall coached Emory & Henry College in 1991. After graduating, he was head coach of Abingdon High School for seven years. In 2006, he returned to Emory & Henry as head coach.
