Biographical Information[edit]

Torii Hunter Jr. is the son of Torii Hunter. He was a two-sports star at Prosper High School, playing both baseball and football. When he graduated, he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 36th round of the 2013 amateur draft. he would have gone much higher had it not been for the fact he had expected a scholarship to play wide receiver for the University of Notre Dame. He was a redshirt in 2013, then played regularly on the gridiron the next three seasons, culminating with 38 receptions for 521 yards in 2016. He also played baseball part-time during those years, and in 2016, he was drafted again, this time by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, in the 23rd round. He did sign this time, but with the understanding that he would not start playing baseball until he had completed his football eligibility.

It was therefore a surprise when at the end of the 2016 football season, he announced that he would forgo his final year of eligibility in order to begin his professional baseball career the following summer. The Angels were elated at the decision, as it meant that they were adding a top-notch athlete who would likely have been a top draft pick had it not been for his commitment to football. He was assigned to the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer League to begin his career in 2017.
