Biographical Information

Tony Piet was a multi-talented player who had 8 seasons in the major leagues. After playing high school ball at Bowen High School in Chicago, he played several years in the minors, including with the Waco Cubs in 1930 and the Wichita Aviators in 1931.

By 1932, Piet was the regular second baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates, finishing second in the National League in stolen bases that year and third in batting average the next. In addition to his speed and his hitting, he could draw a walk, getting a .400 on-base percentage in 1936 with the 1936 Chicago White Sox. He often was among league leaders in hit-by-pitch, finishing in the top four in the league five different times. As a defensive player, his range at second base was above average; he also played over 200 games at third base.

After his baseball career ended, Piet became a well-known car dealer on the South Side of Chicago. He also was a big supporter of youth baseball in the city.

Piet's brother, Joe Piet, was a minor league infielder.
