Biographical Information[edit]
After graduating from East Carolina University, where he played baseball and football, Tony Guzzo was head baseball and football coach at Norfolk Catholic High School, his alma mater, in 1972-1976, after briefly teaching and serving as an assistant coach at Elm City High School the previous school year. He was then a graduate assistant at East Carolina until 1978.
Guzzo became head baseball coach at North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1979, and in four years at the helm, he took the team to the Division III College World Series twice. He was then head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University for a dozen years. He then served as head coach at Old Dominion University from 1995 to 2004, where he coached Justin Verlander. He won over 700 games as a head coach. Following his decade at ODU, he spent time as a member of the North Carolina State University staff in 2005-2006. He was an area scout for the Boston Red Sox in 2007 then became an assistant at Louisburg College. Guzzo returned to Old Dominion as assistant coach in 2017.
