Biographical Information[edit]
Tommy Thompson was a professional baseball player for 22 seasons, 1928 through 1953, a four-decade time period. His first appearance was made with the Bloomington Bloomers of the class D Three-I League at the age of 18. This would be the first of 21 seasons for Thompson in the minor leagues. Tommy's best account of his minor league play was in 1945, when playing as an outfielder with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League, the then 34-year-old appeared in 126 games and hit at a .346 average. Thompson's minor league career hitting stats show a solid .290 batting average and 83 home runs in 2,055 games.
Thompson also spent all or parts of six seasons in the major leagues from 1933 through 1939. His best year in the big leagues came with the Boston Bees in 1936 when he appeared in 106 games, hitting .286 in 304 plate appearances. He also appeared with the Boston Braves (1933-1935), Chicago White Sox (1938-1939) and the St. Louis Browns (1939). Thompson's career big league batting average was .266 in 397 games.
After Thompson's full-time playing career ended he became a minor league manager and part-time player for seven seasons (1946-1952).
Rupert Lockhart Thompson died on May 24, 1971 in Auburn, CA, at the age of 61.
