Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Tommy Greene was signed as a 1st round pick in the 1985 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves and scouts Bill Wight and Smoky Burgess.
Despite having only six major league victories to his name at the time, and despite his catcher Darrin Fletcher having caught only 27 games in his short career, Greene took the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies on May 23, 1991 and threw a no-hitter against the Montreal Expos. It was certainly not a thing of beauty however, as Greene gave up 7 walks in the process. His next start, on May 28th, was also against the Expos, and this time he threw a three-hit shutout while walking none. He had struck out 10 batters in the no-hit game, and added 9 K's in the follow-up. Fletcher was also the catcher for the second game.
in 1993, he pitched five consecutive complete games:
- May 12 at home against Pittsburgh
- May 18 at Florida (shutout)
- May 24 at home against New York
- May 30 at Colorado
- June 5 at home against Colorado
The May 30 game was an 18-1 drubbing in which his Phillies hit six home runs. Known as a good hitting pitcher, Greene himself went deep in the 5th inning off Rockies starter Lance Painter and went 3-4 at the plate, scoring 2 runs. He spun two more complete games in September, including another shutout, for a total of 7 on the season. It was his second of two 200+ inning seasons.
Tommy Greene was named as the inaugural general manager of the Monroe Channelcats part of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, a collegiate wood bat summer baseball league.
Greene was a high school teammate of future major leaguer Patrick Lennon.
