Biographical Information[edit]

"Thomas Thomas . . . is one of the most promising of the rising generation of pitchers. . . . he . . . received his first engagement with the Peoria Club . . . for the season of 1895 . . . Besides being a good pitcher he is a hard-hitting batsman and a young man of good habits." - Sporting Life, featuring Tom Thomas on p. 1 with his likeness, Oct. 23, 1897 - and disagreeing with modern statistic references which show Thomas as playing in the majors in 1894

Thomas "Tom" Thomas played three seasons in the majors. He was in the minors nine years, including four seasons with the Detroit Tigers before they became a major league team. In 1897 he was 24-18 with Detroit.

"In today's mail President Vanderbeck received the signed contract of Thomas Thomas, the Ohio coal miner, who two years ago proved himself one of the best pitchers in the Western League. The big chap played indifferent ball last year, and when he received his contract this year he found a big chunk cut out of his monthly stipend. He let out a roar, but was finally placated by the written agreement that he would be paid stated sums if he won a certain percentage of games. If he plays winning ball his salary will reach a handsome figure." - Sporting Life, April 8, 1899, not mentioning that the "indifferent ball" was a season when Thomas went 20-19
