Biographical Information[edit]

Tom Richardson pitched in the Negro Leagues.

Both the BR Register and The Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues ascribe the 1921-1923 career of Talmadge Richardson and the 1938 career of Henry Richardson to Tom Richardson. Tom really got his start with the independent Chicago American Giants in 1931, going 0-3 with a 8.34 ERA (54 ERA+) against top-flight competition. He was 5-8 with a 6.06 ERA (72 ERA+) the next year for the Washington Pilots. He tied Paul Carter for the 1932 East-West League lead in losses, tied Ted Trent for 2nd with 17 games pitched, led with 14 starts (one ahead of Webster McDonald), tied Ray Brown for the lead with 11 complete games, was 3rd with 107 IP (after Lefty Holmes and Brown), allowed the most runs (88, 23 more than #2 Carter), gave up the most earned runs (72, 19 more than Carter), surrendered the most hits (140, 11 more than McDonald), was 3rd with 39 walks (after Holmes and Trent) and ranked 5th with 53 K.

Richardson moved to the Baltimore Black Sox in 1933 and also pitched one game for the Philadelphia Stars. He was 5-1 with a 3.39 ERA (128 ERA+) for the Sox. He tied for 10th in the 1933 Negro National League in wins and led in winning percentage. In 1934, he fell to 0-2, 16.20 (28 ERA+) for the Bacharach Giants and Black Sox.

Overall, he had gone 10-14 with a 5.77 ERA (76 ERA+) in 34 games against top black teams. He had a 71 OPS+, hitting .214/.267/.357, sometimes being used as a pinch-hitter.
