Biographical Information

Tom Padden caught for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1932 to 1937. When he came up as a rookie in 1932, Arky Vaughan, Pie Traynor, Paul Waner, and Lloyd Waner were four of the eight regular position players on the team. The team finished second that year to the 1932 Chicago Cubs, who had three eventual Hall of Famers as regular position players.For the first few years, he and Earl Grace shared the catching duties, and the last couple years it was he and Al Todd who shared the job. Padden finished out his career with brief appearances six years later, in 1943, with the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Senators.

His best year was 1934, when he hit .321. It was 120 points higher than he had hit the previous year. Although the Pirates did not win the pennant while he played with them, they were usually in contention, finishing as high as second twice.
