Biographical Information[edit]
Tom Martin was the prototypical LOOGY. He pitched 11 years for 7 different teams, getting into 376 games, all of them in relief, but logging only 316 2/3 innings. He only had 20 career decisions (11-9) with 3 saves. Moreover, most of these decisions came in his rookie season of 1997, which he spent with the Houston Astros. That year, he went 5-3, 2.09 with 2 saves in 55 games; he also pitched twice in the Division Series that year. For the remaining ten years of his career, he never had more than three decisions in any year even though he pitched as many as 80 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2003.
