Tom Bernhardt was picked by the New York Yankees in the 34th round of the 1993 amateur draft. He hit .237 as a college freshman at LSU in 1994 but fell to 7 for 51 (with two doubles and two homers) in '95. In 1996, he batted .243 with 6 HR in 111 AB as the #4 outfielder for the 1996 College World Series champions. He did not play in the final game of the Series, which LSU won in a 9-8 classic. As a senior, Bernhardt improved to .322 with 17 dingers for LSU. He led the 1997 College World Series with a .615 average and fell a triple shy of the cycle in the finale, a 13-6 rout of Alabama. He had 3 runs and 3 RBI as LSU's top producer in the game. He was named to the Series All-Tournament team, but teammate Brandon Larson beat him out as the College World Series Most Outstanding Player. Bernhardt went to the Chicago Cubs in the 46th round of the 1997 amateur draft. He spent his one summer in pro ball with the AZL Cubs (.267/.410/.433, 11 R in 8 G) and Williamsport Cubs (.205/.263/.320, 39 K in 122 AB).
