Biographical Information[edit]
Todd Van Poppel was a brilliant high school pitcher who was a first round pick of the Oakland Athletics in the 1990 amateur draft. He was rushed to the major leagues but was never able to perform at the level expected of him. He experienced some arm trouble although he was later able to mount a comeback and become a serviceable middle reliever in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Van Poppel holds the record for most innings pitched in a season in which the number of earned runs he gave up was greater than the number of innings he pitched. In 1996, a season he split between the Athletics and the Detroit Tigers, he pitched 99 1/3 innings, allowing 100 earned runs.
