Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Loughran was the first player to come to the major leagues out of Manhattan College. While in the majors, he played catcher as a backup to Buck Ewing.

The SABR biography of Jim Price says that Loughran actually caught Mickey Welch while Ewing caught Ed Begley.

He was called Thomas Loughran in older sources. He went to Manhattan College as an undergrad and got a law degree from Columbia University. He practiced in New York City. His son, William H. Loughran, Jr., became the baseball coach at Manhattan College.
