The Dickson Baseball Dictionary

From BR Bullpen

The Dickson Baseball Dictionary is a reference book by Paul Dickson describing the meaning and origins of thousands of baseball terms, dispelling countless myths in the meantime. It is considered the definitive work on baseball slang and terminology, shedding light on an entire segment of the American English dialect. Its value is recognized by linguists well beyond the field of baseball. Originally published in 1989, the book went through two revised editions, the first of which is known as The New Dickson Baseball Dictionary.

The book's original edition was honored by the "Macmillan-SABR Baseball Research Award". Its third revised edition was described as "the definitive work on the language of baseball" by the Wall Street Journal.
