January 8: Today's featured birthday is that of Brian Boehringer, who turns 56.
- 1908 - The sacrifice fly rule is adopted for the first time; it will be rescinded and tweaked before taking its actual form in 1954.
- 1909 - Despite coming off a 11-7, 2.27 season, Joe McGinnity is released by the New York Giants, ending his major league career. He will star in the minors for years to come.
- 1948 - Herb Pennock (pictured) and Pie Traynor are elected to the Hall of Fame.
- 1956 - After 37 years of play, the Piedmont League folds, one of many minor leagues to collapse in the 1950s.
- 1989 - College star John Olerud undergoes brain surgery for the removal of an aneurysm and will have to wear a helmet in the field for the rest of his career, but will go on to stardom in the majors.
- 2002 - The sale of the Boston Red Sox to a group headed by John Henry becomes official.
